One of the oldest existing state agencies, the Arkansas History Commission was created by the General Assembly in 1905. Inspired and guided during its early years by John Hugh Reynolds, the Commission is the official archives of the state, responsible for collecting and preserving the source materials of the history of Arkansas.

Dallas T. Herndon, the first director, was employed in 1911 and served for forty-two years. During most of his tenure the offices and archives were located in the present State Capitol. In 1951, when the Old State House was restored, the History Commission was moved into a part of the west wing of that building. Under Herndon's successor, Ted R. Worley, a three-story annex was added to the west wing. Dr. John L. Ferguson became director of the History Commission in 1960 and served through April 2005. Dr. Wendy Richter became director in May 2005.

The agency continues the tradition of organizing and maintaining the state and local history of Arkansas by collecting manuscript materials, census records, military records, family histories, and various county, state and federal records. The History Commission, which in 1971 became part of the Department of Parks and Tourism, moved into its present quarters in the One Capitol Mall Building in 1979. The Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives became a branch of the Arkansas History Commission in 2005.

As the Commission has grown, so has its patronage, serving over 14,000 persons annually in recent years. The history of Arkansas can be researched through manuscripts, books, microfilm, newspapers, maps, and photographs.

The History Commission is composed of seven members appointed by the Governor with the approval of the State Senate. Members serve seven-year terms staggered so that one expires each January. Members may be appointed for additional terms.

This history of St. Anne’s Church was taken from the book “The Action Priest.” It was written by Father Lauro and Arthur Orrmont and it tells of Father Joe’s very driven and dedicated life to spreading the faith. The beautiful parish churches of St. Elizabeth’s in Eureka Springs and St. Anne’s in Berryville were due to the great work of Father Joseph Lauro. He’s a man of action. As soon as he saw what he had to do, he went out and got people to donate materials and get the project started. He also was also a very loving and kind man that would do anything for you. His book recounts all the experiences of his life of bringing the love of Christ to his job as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, and as a bomber pilot in the US Air Force in 1943, and as a priest to the people of Arkansas from 1949 to 1962. After this he was called to the poor people of Ecuador in Central America until his death in 1971.

Father Lauro was ordained May 17, 1949 at St. Andrews Cathedral in Little Rock. His first assignment was to Harrison, Arkansas to assist Father Harry Chinery at Mother of God Church Mission which covered five counties. Father Joe would be responsible for Eureka Springs’ church, St. Elizabeth. It needed restoration and Katy Morgan invited him to live with she and her husband while the church was being rebuilt. Father Joe had it finished by the fall of the next year, 1950. The rectory was built in 1954 and was donated by Carl Koch of Eureka Springs

With the growing congregation from Berryville, Father Joe decided that Berryville needed a church. The church would cost about $120,000.00 to build. In June 1954, Father Jim Burke of Chicago sent him $5000.00, and Monsignor Lux of Chicago also sent him $5000.00 from the Catholic Extension Society. Father Joe had Carl Koch look for land for the church. When it was found that the Catholic Church wanted it, the price of the land doubled. John Torek, a Berryville accountant, owned a piece of land with his wife, Billie, and Homer Johnson. They wanted $3500.00 for it but Billie convinced her husband to donate their half to the church and Father Joe could buy the land for $1750.00. John Torek was Catholic but Bellie and Homer were Baptists. Father hired Lawrence Putnam and Wayne Johnson as contractors. They were Protestants also. Some antagonists were against building the Catholic Church but Father ignored them. Most of the Protestants in Berryville and Eureka Springs were for building the church. The architect was Frank Polito of Chicago and he did his drawings at no cost.

Father Lauro had bought the property, hired the contractors and received the blueprints before he went to Bishop Fletcher in Little Rock for permission to build the church in Berryville. The Bishop was surprised with the Protestant support for the building of the church. The Protestant women even had a fundraiser bake sale for the church. The Green Forest and Berryville banks donated $50.00 each. Hanby Building Supplies sold him supplies at cost. Father bought a used heating system from a Protestant church in Springdale.

Charlie Nelson donated the church doors. Jack Cadelli from Fort Smith did the terrazzo floors. Wayne Johnson helped put up the two ton cross through the roof over the church entrance. The alter was ordered from an Italian sculpture near Rome. A $1000.00 donation for it came from Father James Burke. Wayne Johnson and Father Joe went to New Orleans with Wayne’s truck to pick it up from the boat and it was so heavy that they had three blowouts on the way home. The Sacred Heart statue in the courtyard was purchased for $175.00.

On November 15, 1958, Archbishop O’Brien, Bishop Fletcher and Monsignor Murray came for the dedication of the new church. Bishop Fletcher remarked how beautiful and big it was. He said “I didn’t know you were going to build a cathedral.” When Father Joe sent him the plans, he had conveniently left off the dimensions. It was Gothic in style and constructed of stone from Carthage Missouri ninety miles north. The church cost $60,000.00 which was raised by various contributors and was completely debt free. It was three times the size of St. Elizabeth’s and the largest church in Carroll County in 1958.

After the dedication the prelates were invited to Billie Torek’s home for tea. She had borrowed Mattie Hambey’s curtains and silverware for the occasion. The Bishop and Archbishop came in smoking big black cigars and Bishop Fletcher remarked the hospitality of this half Baptist house doesn’t bother them a bit.

St. Stephen Catholic Church

St. Stephen Parish is the realization of a dream of about six couples who felt that they needed a place of worship and gathering in the Bentonville area. Going to outlying churches, they just couldn't feel the closeness, warmth and unity of a parish family. Also, it was difficult getting to church in inclement weather.

These people rallied the Catholics in the Bentonville area and began positive steps toward building a parish family. Toward the end of 1987 the request was presented to the Most Reverend Andrew J. McDonald, Bishop of the Diocese of Little Rock.

The Bishop approved the project and thus the first Catholic Community in Bentonville was taking shape. The embryonic Catholic Church of Bentonville was designated a mission of St. Vincent de Paul Church of Rogers with the Pastor, Rev. Richard Oswald with Rev. John Marconi, Associate Pastor, in charge. As a result, the first Mass of the Bentonville Catholic Church was celebrated on March 5, 1988 in a public building. About 150 souls comprised the new parish.

The name of St. Stephen was chosen for the parish. A building committee was formed. A Pastoral Council was elected. A building fund was underway and enthusiastic parishioner pledges were received. Financing was arranged through the Diocese. Building contractors, H.W. Roper, Inc., with architect, Rex Morris, were engaged. Good progress was soon apparent.

The initial plan called for a multi-purpose building with facilities to serve a growing parish. Today a permanent church building is attached just west of the present structure. This multi-purpose building is now our Parish Life Center.

After two moves to public school buildings and the necessary planning and construction of the new building at 1300 NE “J” Street, the first Mass in the new facility was happily celebrated on October 6, 1991 at 10:00 AM.

The rapid rate of construction and final completion was certainly the result of the fine supervision of the building superintendent and the cooperation of our enthusiastic pastors and lay people involved. During all the moving and shifting, a number of other positive things were happening. The PSR program with about 50 children registered was started. First Communion was held, as were Confirmation readiness classes. The CYO (later changed to Catholic Youth Ministry) was formed. The Ladies Altar Society was organized. Our choir was established. The Sunday bulletins were published and church dinners on special occasions were started.

The formal dedication by the Most Reverend Andrew J. McDonald was held on November 9, 1991. Assisting clergy were Rev. Richard Oswald, Pastor; Rev. Laval Coutre, Associate Pastor; Rev. John Marconi, former Assoc. Pastor and Rev. Mr. Leslie Vendl, Deacon.

A number of changes have since taken place. Father John Marconi was transferred and Father Laval Coutre was assigned as temporary Associate Pastor. Father Laval was later transferred, and Father Michael Sinkler was sent to us. He is still with us.

Besides the Eucharist on Saturday at 5:00 PM and Sunday at 7:45 AM & 10:00 AM, Communion Service and/or Mass is celebrated on Thursdays at 8:30 AM in the Chapel with Fr. Mike, or Carol Patterson officiating.

Our new worship space was dedicated on March 28, 2004. Seating 950 people immediately, and expandable to 1400 as we continue to grow.

To further note the progress, St. Stephen has baptisms, marriages, funerals, First Communions and Confirmations. Our Religious Education programs have grown to over 425 students. We have Wednesday Evening Scripture Study, and Monday morning women’s Scripture Study programs, Sunday Morning Catholic Café Adult Formation and RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation). We also have dinners and various other activities. Very important to the administration of the church is a Pastoral Administrator/Director of Religious Education, Administrative Assistants, Accountant/Liturgist, Youth Ministers, teachers, bookkeepers, choir, musicians and choral leaders, altar servers, sacristans, lectors, Eucharist ministers, ushers, greeters, social committee, welcoming committee, groundskeeper, church clean-up crews, and volunteers for any task or program which arises.

We dedicated our new Columbarium February 19, 2006. The current capacity is 144. Its stone façade is similar to the Baptism Font in the worship space.

The facility now provides us the dedicated worship space we have needed for so long. The environment of this area is simplistic but beautiful in its angles and colors. The stained glass that adorns the tower and Eucharistic Chapel, Baptistery, sculpture of the Risen Christ and Liturgical décor all reflect the vision of who we are as a parish and brings into full focus a setting of holiness to be in communion with our Lord.

In addition, our worship space has many wonderful areas that are attached for our use.

The Narthex that you enter from is for gathering before and after Mass, for parents to take their children to calm them and then return to Mass. This area also houses the Parish office, Accounting/Liturgy office and Elementary Education office. We have three Chapels, one Eucharistic Devotional Chapel and St. Francis of Assisi Day Chapel and Reconciliation Chapel. Three large meeting rooms, Library/Conference room, work sacristy and liturgical environment store room, choir practice room, dressing sacristy for priest, deacon and altar servers surround the perimeter of the worship space.

The dream of building Wildwood began when Sarah Elizabeth Van Patten of Washington D.C. became the bride of Prosper Harvey Ellsworth, a physician, in 1873. Sarah moved from a highly cultured and socially conscious eastern city to join Prosper in the rough-hewn country village of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Sarah chose the basic design from a magazine and persuaded her brother to do the architectural work. Novaculite rock was quarried nearby for the massive foundations. The interior rooms are large to accommodate the many parties and receptions given by the Ellsworths. As individualists, they departed from the usual square rooms and creatively utilized oblong, triangular and pentagonal shapes to permit two to three exposures and four to five windows to each room. Construction took six years at the cost of $40,000.

Native trees were cut and seasoned three full years before they were fashioned into ornate woodwork. The intricate work was performed by woodworkers from the Pullman Company who were working nearby and the finer carvings were done by Mrs. Ellsworth herself. Each of the downstairs rooms features a different wood. Massive sliding pocket doors separate the rooms. The cherry stairway that twists upward from the reception hall is a woodworking masterpiece and its rich tones are highlighted by two large stained glass windows that were designed by Sarah and crafted in Italy. The finely detailed fireplace tiles were imported from England.

The Ellsworth's left many historical marks on the face of Arkansas. Sarah led the fight to preserve Arkansas' beautiful Old State Capital in Little Rock and was instrumental in the movement for the selection of the Arkansas state flag. Prosper moved to Hot Springs in 1866 and as one of the Spa City's earliest physicians, Dr. Ellsworth was one of the founders of the Hot Springs Medical Society.

Before their marriage they were active in the Civil War. Dr. Ellsworth was a surgeon in the Union Army. His cousin, Elmer Ellsworth, was the first person killed in the war. Sarah sang in the chorus on the day President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address.

Our Rock Cottages were all remodeled in 2004 and now all feature a Jacuzzi for 2 and a Fireplace. From “A Tuscany Dream” to “A Santa Fe Sunset” these cottages offer a great retreat!

Our new Treehouses, which are perched in the trees premiered in May 2005. Not at all what you would expect in the way of furnishing, well except for maybe one. “Elaine’s Treehouse” which is reminiscent of my childhood. I always wanted a Treehouse. The other two, well I won’t spoil the surprise, but I will give you a hint. For one of them think NEW YORK CITY!!!

Now if you are on a tight budget but would like something more than a white motel room, we also have themed “Lodge” rooms! One of these was used for a few scenes in a Billy Bob Thornton movie “Chrystal”, which was filmed in June of 2003! A Sampling of Lodge rooms is “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”-with an old gas pump, drive-in speakers and a jukebox radio at the table, “The Sweet Little Room”-which got it name from so many guests saying "This is such a sweet little room" and of course “Thornton’s Queen Suite” and a couple others!

Second Baptist Church began on January 25, 1905, as Sweet Hill Mission, a ministry of Arkadelphia's First Baptist Church. At its conception an average of forty persons attended Sunday School. By August, seven months after its establishment as a mission, Sweet Hill asked to break its ties with First Baptist and begin its own work. The now Sweet Hill Baptist Church consisted of twenty-three members.

H. H. Thomas, a Ouachita College ministerial student, came as part-time pastor when the church organized. Under his leadership, Sweet Hill Baptist conducted a November revival resulting in fifty-five conversions and forty additions to the church. By March, 1906, the church had about 100 members, four deacons, and six Sunday School teachers, a marked increase in size within less than half a year of its organization.

In 1905 and 1906 Sweet Hill became involved in associational and state convention work beginning an unbroken association.

Between 1907 and 1911 four different part‑time pastors served the church. In 1912 Dr. Noble Townsend, a local physician and ordained minister, became the first full‑time pastor of the church.

Sweet Hill had several different pastors in the ensuing years; some were ministerial students from Ouachita College. In 1922 and 1923 the church added Sunday School rooms to the auditorium and built the first parsonage.

When the Southern Baptist Convention began promoting the Cooperative Program in 1925, Sweet Hill Baptist Church was one of only 150 Arkansas Baptist State Convention churches adopting the program. In the same year, under the leadership of Pastor Taylor Stanfill, the church completely remodeled the auditorium and re-roofed the church building, making it "one of the nicest sanctuaries in Arkadelphia." (Arkansas Baptist, August 20, 1925)

On September 19, 1928, Sweet Hill voted to change its name to Second Baptist Church. For its first twenty-three years Sweet Hill Baptist had considered itself a community church, but now the church was expanding its ministry to include the entire city of Arkadelphia.

Second Baptist launched a building program in 1938 to erect an educational building and to update and enlarge the auditorium during the pastorate of Sidney Wiles. From 1937-1941 Second experienced considerable growth. Church membership increased 35 percent. Sunday School enrollment and average attendance had increased more than fifty percent. Four Vacation Bible Schools had been held with an average enrollment of 140. Gifts to church causes had greatly increased and the pastor's salary had increased forty percent. A church library ministry began in 1940. A church bus ministry began in 1941 and continued until 1956.

Under the leadership of Stanley Cooper, the church expanded twice, in 1949 with another annex added on to the auditorium to provide more Sunday School space and in 1935 with a new educational building.

In 1952 Second restarted a mission, originally begun in 1915, in the northwestern part of town, named Park Hill Mission. It is now Park Hill Baptist Church.

Carl Kluck came as pastor of Second Baptist in February, 1960, and continued until December, 1990, when he retired. Brother Kluck led the church in three large building expansions. The first, completed in late 1960, provided a new nursery and educational space for three Sunday School departments. By March, 1968, a new auditorium that would seat 375, provide a choir room, church offices and pastor's study was completed. The final expansion, the C. W. Kluck Educational Building, a 10,000 square foot addition which provides nursery, preschool, children, college, and library space was dedicated in March, 1988. The church raised $250,000 of the $385,000 required to finish the building.

Dr. Shelby Cowling began his pastorate here at Second Baptist in 1991. He served from June, 1991 until February, 1998. During that time, Second expanded its facilities, properties, and ministries. A March, 1997 tornado did extensive damage to the church buildings and surrounding community; much of the area is still in a rebuilding and recovery phase. Major repair and renovation was done to the sanctuary, fellowship hall and youth rooms, and two houses provided for staff adjacent to the church. Second was able to acquire several lots which are projected to meet future needs of providing adequate parking and new facilities. At the time of the storm, Second had been in a building and fund-raising program for the construction of a new fellowship center.

In 1998 Second was debt free financially. The youth and college ministries were thriving numerically and spiritually. Brother Jerre Hassell just finished serving as interim pastor starting in June of 1998 to April of 2000. The church called John Blase from Stephens, Arkansas to be the new pastor. His first day in the pulpit was April 16, 2000. Under Bro. John, the church started a building project of a new sanctuary costing 2.4 million dollars. Home Sunday School groups for the Adult 6 age (young married and single career) began on Sunday evenings. F.W. Friends for preschool and children also was started on Sunday evenings to encourage scripture memorization and Bible study. This took the place of G.A.'s, R.A.'s, and Mission Friends. A more contemporary style of worship and music was also instituted by Bro. John and staff. Bro. John was called to a church outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado and his last Sunday was September 28, 2003.

Faron Rogers was called as pastor and started his ministry on October 24, 2004. Faron moved from DeQueen, Arkansas First Baptist Church where he pastored for over 15 years.

On a hot mid-July evening in 1851, sixteen people gathered in the small southwest-central Arkansas village of Arkadelphia. Though not incorporated, the village on the banks of the Ouachita River was the center of much of the political and social life of Clark County. The town had been founded, according to tradition, in 1810 by a blacksmith named Adam Blakely. The county for which it was the seat of government after 1842 antedated Arkansas' statehood, and had been the third county formed. Like most of the state, the sparsely populated county of just over 4000 inhabitants remained frontier until well after the Civil War. And Arkadelphia, on that July 15, 1851, owed its meager population to the lucky combination of two features. First, the community perched on the bluff above the river; second, it was situated on one of the few roads in the fifteen-year-old-state-- the road between the state capitol at Little Rock on the Arkansas River and the Gateway to Texas, Hempstead County. These people meeting that hot evening, who comprised a significant portion of the village's 250 inhabitants, were not directly concerned with Arkadelphia's political or social amenities. That night, they were concerned that the county seat of Clark County had no Baptist church.

From the first meeting of the fellowship which formed the First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia, the pattern for future development existed. All the actions on that and subsequent evenings were part of a covenant agreement, a covenant the members made among themselves, with other Baptists, and with God.
