The Fort Smith Classic presented by Stephens, Inc. is a Nationwide Tour golf tournament on the Nationwide Tour. It is held each year at Hardscrabble Golf Club in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It is the only annual PGA Tour event in the U.S. state of Arkansas.

The 2007 purse was a record $525,000, with $94,500 going to the winner, Jay Williamson, who shot 16-under par. It was the first career victory for Williamson on either the PGA or Nationwide Tours.

The tournament was founded in 1998 as the Fort Smith Classic. Rheem was the major sponsor from 2003 to 2006.

The golf course itself does not provide a particularly long or difficult layout--measuring 6,561-yards with a rating of 71.7 (back tees) and a mere 5,952-yards and a rating of 68.9 from the member’s tees.But, as with any 18-hole, par 72 layouts, a little local knowledge goes a long way here.

Because of the constantly undulating terrain and often, severely sloping fairways, placement off the tee is paramount.Playing a slice to any of the left-to-right sloping fairways means a prolonged search among the trees and added strokes to your score.

In addition, the elevation changes, sometimes subtle, along with a few incredibly long greens (18 is a good 40-yards deep) can mean as much as a three-club difference when selecting a club for your approach.

So if communing with nature or working on your chipping and putting are your idea of a good golf experience, don’t listen to the playing tips and advice freely given in the pro shop or in the club house.But if you want to score low at Glenwood, it can be had if you spend the time to get to know the layout and the people who know it like the back or their hands.

They’ll be glad to tell you where to hit it and when, but to really get the full experience of Glenwood, you’ve got to play it a few times.And, given that the course is a bit remote, plan to spend a few days. Make reservations at the pro shop to stay at the reasonably priced, course-side cottage and play the course more than once to discover all the hidden nuances.

The course-side cottage is a 12-room lodge with a large common area that includes a community kitchen and dining area. So, the open, friendly atmosphere is as prevalent at the lodge as it is throughout the Glenwood facility.

The club house, boasting a gigantic fireplace—open on both sides—offers the perfect space for relaxing after your round or spinning a yarn or two.It’s also spacious enough and perfectly appointed for outings and events of all sizes.

Abutting the club house area is one of the best stocked pro shops in all of Arkansas.The shop at Glenwood Golf Club carries all the major club manufacturers (Callaway, Titleist, Taylor Made), shoe and apparel models. It’s truly an amazing selection—the likes of which you wouldn’t expect in a smaller, out-of-the-way track.

But that’s typical of Glenwood.Its understated, almost bashful appearances belie the fact that this is a world-class golf course with galaxy-class people running it.There’s almost an embarrassed pride when you ask Sean Carey to talk about Glenwood, but make no mistake—it is pride!
