The Baker House is located in downtown North Little Rock's historic Argenta district. This gem of Argenta is a setting for ornate, curly pine woodwork, and a central circular staircase and elaborate oak mantles. The exterior features include a 3 story tower, fountains, gardens, and even a hitching post for our horse riding guests. The house is decorated with Victorian antiques and period peices. Each bedroom suite has its own private bath with some featuring fireplaces and claw foot soaking tubs. Every morning breakfast is served in the formal dining room on period china, and in the evening guests are offered a variety of snacks and beverages from the butlers pantry.
The Baker House is an exceptional Queene Anne Victorian house built in 1898-1899. It went through several owners before being restored in 1977 and was then placed on the National Register of Historic Structures in 1978. The house was then given new life as North Little Rock's first bed and breakfast offering a pleasing mixture of Southern Hospitality and Victorian elegance. The Baker House Bed & Breakfast is conveniently located across the street from one of the finest Italian restaurants in Central Arkansas, Ristorante Capeo. Dinner at Ristorante Capeo is a must for those who enjoy dining in a casual relaxed setting. Built in 1880 as a gentleman farmer's intown estate, Rosemont is the only authentic Victorian era farmhouse remaining in Little Rock's vast Quapaw Quarter Historic District. The dream of building Wildwood began when Sarah Elizabeth Van Patten of Washington D.C. became the bride of Prosper Harvey Ellsworth, a physician, in 1873. Sarah moved from a highly cultured and socially conscious eastern city to join Prosper in the rough-hewn country village of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Sarah chose the basic design from a magazine and persuaded her brother to do the architectural work. Novaculite rock was quarried nearby for the massive foundations. The interior rooms are large to accommodate the many parties and receptions given by the Ellsworths. As individualists, they departed from the usual square rooms and creatively utilized oblong, triangular and pentagonal shapes to permit two to three exposures and four to five windows to each room. Construction took six years at the cost of $40,000.
Native trees were cut and seasoned three full years before they were fashioned into ornate woodwork. The intricate work was performed by woodworkers from the Pullman Company who were working nearby and the finer carvings were done by Mrs. Ellsworth herself. Each of the downstairs rooms features a different wood. Massive sliding pocket doors separate the rooms. The cherry stairway that twists upward from the reception hall is a woodworking masterpiece and its rich tones are highlighted by two large stained glass windows that were designed by Sarah and crafted in Italy. The finely detailed fireplace tiles were imported from England.
The Ellsworth's left many historical marks on the face of Arkansas. Sarah led the fight to preserve Arkansas' beautiful Old State Capital in Little Rock and was instrumental in the movement for the selection of the Arkansas state flag. Prosper moved to Hot Springs in 1866 and as one of the Spa City's earliest physicians, Dr. Ellsworth was one of the founders of the Hot Springs Medical Society.
Before their marriage they were active in the Civil War. Dr. Ellsworth was a surgeon in the Union Army. His cousin, Elmer Ellsworth, was the first person killed in the war. Sarah sang in the chorus on the day President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address.
Tucked beneath large Magnolia Trees enjoy the wrap around porch swing and rockers capturing the view of both West Mountain and Hot Springs Mountain. In the distance, beautiful & distinctive early 20th century buildings tower above the city. The Inn's property has a Lily pond and patio, side verandah, and large yard with swings and sitting areas. There's on-site lighted parking and Trailer boat parking is conveniently located adjacent to the property.
Part of the ambiance of our Bed & Breakfast is discovering the unique history of the past century. Restoration of the Inn was completed in 1999 and future projects on additional property are underway.
Large pine pocket doors separate the Foyer, Parlor and Dining Rooms, each elegantly furnished. A beautiful gas fireplace and original Oak Mantel keeps it warm in the winter.

In the Main House a delicious breakfast is served in the Dinning room between 8:30 & 9:30 at antique English Pub tables, fine China and fresh cut flowers.
When weather permits, breakfast is served outside on the verandah. We also have homemade treats in the evening.
